چکیده

The variability in the vertical position of a sewage plume, far from its point of discharge, is described and explained by the forcing from an internal tide. The sewage plume, discharged from the Sand Island treatment plant in the coastal waters of Mamala Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, was mapped using ship-board towyo observations collected during September 25 }October 1, 1994. Horizontal currents and temperature were measured in 1994}1995 at moorings located throughout Mamala Bay. Data at mooring D2, located close to the di!user, suggested that the presence of an internal tide of 18 km wavelength propagating along the isobaths at speed 0.4 m s~1 was responsible for large (more than half the total depth) semi-diurnal vertical displacements of the isotherms. Comparison of the vertical far-"eld plume position and isotherm displacements at the mooring showed that the horizontal propagation of the internal tide was westward along the isobaths. These data challenge the classical view of a sewage plume `establisheda at a constant depth of equilibrium and are the "rst example showing the e!ects of internal tides on sewage plumes. Mantle dynamics. Sea-floor study gives plumes from the deep mantle a boost.

Earth’s interior is like a pot of boiling water— very viscous, very slowly churning water. The great debate about how Earth’s interior operates to shed internal heat and shape the surface began with disagreements over whether two layers in the pot—the upper and lower mantle—always remain separate, like oil and water. That debate ended when seismologists imaged Earth’s cold, brittle surface scum...

The spatial variability of nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in a sand aquifer influenced by onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems: a case study on St. George Island, Florida.

Groundwater from a shallow freshwater lens on St. George Island, a barrier island located in the Panhandle of Florida, eventually discharges into Apalachicola Bay or the Gulf of Mexico. Nutrient concentrations in groundwaters were monitored downfield from three onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems (OSTDS) on the island. Estimates of natural groundwater nutrient concentrations were obtai...

Diversity and distribution of True Crabs (Brachyura) from intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf

Rocky shores are one of the most important habitats of marine environment in coastal areas. This study was done in 2010-2011 to investigate the diversity of true crabs in intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm island. Samples were collected from intertidal zones during the low-tide at 5 stations. The specimens were fixed in 70% Etanol and transferred to laboratory for identification. Altogether, 15 c...

Usefulness of monitoring tropical streams for male-specific RNA coliphages.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of monitoring streams in Hawaii for FRNA coliphages as a reliable indicator of sewage contamination. This study was undertaken as a result of our previous findings that monitoring streams in Hawaii for traditional faecal indicator bacteria (faecal coliform, Escherichia coli, enterococci) was not useful in determining when streams are co...

Generation of internal waves by a supercritical stratified plume

[1] The generation of internal waves by a propagating river plume is studied in the framework of a fully nonlinear nonhydrostatic numerical model. The vertical fluid stratification, parameters of tide, river discharge, and the bottom topography were taken close to those observed near the Columbia River mouth. It was found that in the beginning of the ebb tidal phase the river water intruding in...
